Something I’ve noticed when talking to business owners is that many of them take a certain amount of pride in doing everything themselves. They want me to know that they’re not afraid to hustle to do all the things it takes to run a successful business. To these people, I often say, “It is SO amazing that you can do literally everything in your business… but you need to stop.”
Hold the phone. Is that right? Am I telling you not to be such a rockstar when it comes to running your business? Yep, that’s exactly what I’m saying.
In this blog post, I want to explain to you why I truly believe you cannot do all the things if you want to scale your business and make more money. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can get to where you truly want to go in your professional career.
You HAVE to Get Out of Your Own Way
You probably started your business with a solopreneur’s mindset. More than likely, your goal was to spend as little money as possible so you could start to pay yourself and re-invest back into your business.
There were many late nights spent Googling “how to start an email list” or “how to pay business taxes” and while you might have figured it all out on your own, those were nights you could have been innovating ways to grab more of your market or adding a new product line or service to your offering before your competitor.
Our time is finite. We all have the same 24 hours in a day to work with. When you choose to spend that time on tasks that don’t really move the needle, you’re basically forcing your business to remain stagnant. We trick ourselves into thinking that we’re saving ourselves money by doing it ourselves but that is a lie. What we’re really doing is treading water.
Prioritizing Your Goals
If you’ve been with me for a while, you probably knew this was coming. There’s a reason I talk about prioritizing so much. This is something that’s easy and accessible to everyone, and the more you grow, the more you should be doing it.
As a savvy business owner, I want you to always have a running list of goals that you want to achieve and a timeline that you want to stick to. Being strategic is crucial because, as you know, things will come up and try to derail you. You absolutely must know where your focus is needed in order to grow your business to the next level.
Once you have your goals laid out, you simply need to prioritize them so you’re always working on the most important things in any given moment. If you can’t do it all yourself (and there’s a good chance you can’t) you need to hire skilled and reliable people you can delegate tasks to.
Leaning on Others
You are not the same person you were when you first got the idea to start your business. As you grow, you need more people to help execute your big bold vision. At first, that might mean hiring a virtual assistant for a few hours a week. But soon, you should be bringing on more talented people who can take your vision and run with it.
If this scares you, just remember that you are never going to achieve the dramatic success you so truly deserve if you don’t take some calculated risks. Your growth will taper off real quick if you’re not leaning on other experts to do what you either don’t know how to do or don’t have time to do. You need to be focused on the vision. You need others around you to execute on it.
Can I get real for a moment? If you want to scale, if you want more revenue, if you want to be more visible, if you want to be more successful, you need to get out of your own way. If you feel lost in your business or have been stuck in one spot for far too long, it’s time to hire a coach to guide you and get you past your roadblocks.
Why can’t your business succeed beyond your wildest dreams? You deserve to have that happen to you, and it can, but you just have to stop trying to do everything yourself.
